Our Services

  • Compensatory cognitive skills training teaches practical strategies and techniques to work around cognitive difficulties rather than trying to restore lost abilities. This approach recognizes that when certain brain functions are impaired, we can develop alternative methods to accomplish the same goals and maintain independence in daily life.

Our Approach: We focus on teaching external aids and internal strategies that bypass cognitive weaknesses while building on existing strengths. External compensations include using smartphones, calendars, alarms, checklists, and organizational systems. Internal strategies involve developing new routines, mental techniques, and problem-solving approaches that work around specific deficits.

What We Target: Training addresses memory problems through reminder systems and encoding strategies, attention difficulties through environmental modifications and focusing techniques, executive function challenges through step-by-step planning methods, and processing speed issues through pacing strategies and prioritization skills.

The Process: We begin with a thorough assessment to identify specific cognitive strengths and challenges. Training is highly individualized, starting with simple techniques and gradually building complexity. We practice strategies in real-world situations and adjust approaches based on what works best for each person.

Benefits: This training helps people regain confidence, maintain employment, manage households, and participate fully in their communities. Rather than focusing on what's been lost, we emphasize building new skills that enable success despite cognitive changes.

  • A neuropsychological evaluation assesses the functioning of brain systems, specifically cognition. The abilities evaluated include memory, attention, processing speed, reasoning, problem-solving, mood and personality and more. Neuropsychological evaluation can help with with diagnosis, treatment, or other recommendations.

The neuropsychologist will first meet with you and ask questions to get an understanding of your situation and concerns. Then you will complete tests typically involving writing or drawing, solving puzzles or answering questions, and responding to things presented on a computer. Finally, the neuropsychologist will write up the overall findings in a report and will go over the results and recommendations with you.

  • A capacity evaluation determines whether someone can make informed decisions about specific areas of their life, such as finances, medical care, or living arrangements. We assess their ability to understand relevant information, appreciate consequences, reason through options, and communicate their choices clearly.

Our evaluation includes clinical interviews, cognitive testing, and review of medical records. We focus on the specific decisions in question rather than making broad judgments about overall competence.

These evaluations are often requested for guardianship proceedings, estate planning, medical decisions, or when families have concerns about a loved one's judgment. They may be needed following brain injury, dementia, or during mental health situations.

We conduct respectful, thorough assessments that honor individual autonomy while ensuring safety. Our goal is to provide clear, objective findings that support appropriate decision-making and identify ways to enhance the person's capacity when possible.

  • A medical-legal neuropsychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment that examines cognitive functioning in the context of legal proceedings. These specialized evaluations provide objective data about brain-behavior relationships to help courts, attorneys, and insurance companies understand how neurological conditions or injuries may affect a person's cognitive abilities and daily functioning.
